Status Report 8: Congressman Michaud Visits Tidal Energy Site |
| |
Date: October 2008 |
| |
ORPC Maine and the University of Maine recently hosted Second District Congressman
Michael H. Michaud to show first-hand the economic importance and significant progress
of tidal energy development in the State of Maine. The visit to ORPC Maine’s office in
Eastport, ME provided Rep. Michaud with the opportunity to experience, in person, the
achievements of tidal power development in the region. “One of my priorities for this
region of Maine is to encourage sustainable economic development and I recognize and
appreciate the significant contributions made by ORPC Maine in their efforts to bring the
environmental and economic benefits of tidal energy to the region. Creating jobs and
emission-free electricity is a winning combination,” Rep. Michaud said. |

Status Report 3: Energy Tide I Turbine-Generator Unit (TGU) Prototype
Testing Complete and Returns Favorable Results! |
| |
Date: 20th May 2008 |
| |
Ocean Renewable Power Company, LLC, (ORPC) an industry leader in the development of
tidal energy technology and projects, is pleased to announce it has successfully completed
the at-sea testing of its prototype turbine-generator unit (TGU) with positive results that
clearly demonstrate the technical feasibility of the TGU. The testing was conducted at
ORPC’s Cobscook Bay and Western Passage tidal energy sites in Eastport, ME. The $1.2
million prototype TGU demonstration project commenced last summer and the prototype
TGU and deployment barge (the ORPC “Energy Tide I”) were launched on December 8th.
The most severe winter weather in decades delayed completion on the testing until recently.
The testing aboard the Energy Tide I was officially concluded on April 25th. Demonstrating
the technical feasibility of the TGU is a major step forward in the commercialization of
ORPC’s ocean current generation (OCGen™) technology. |

Status Report 1: Prototype Testing Enters Final Phase |
| |
Date: 21st Apr 2008 |
| |
Entering the final stages of prototype testing of its ocean current generation (OCGen™) turbinegenerator
unit (TGU), ORPC has moved its deployment barge to stationary moorings near Dog
Island in Western Passage offshore from Eastport, Maine. The barge with the prototype TGU
deployed 30-feet below is held in place using a deep sea mooring system and up to a week’s
worth of data will be collected as the tidal flows of Western Passage pass through it. The data
being collected includes current flow, temperature and performance measurements. The barge/
TGU was initially launched in early December 2007 and progress was severely hampered
by the severe weather in Maine this winter but the deployment phase of the prototype TGU
demonstration projects will now be concluded by May 1, 2008. |
